Fall in the heartland

Welcome to InKing Royalty’s September Blog Hop! This year’s Blog Hop themes are inspired by popular songs and this month’s song is “September Morn,” a Neil Diamond classic from the late ’70’s.

As you can guess, our Blog Hop today is filled with projects inspired by the beauty of autumn, specifically September, the month when the air becomes crisp and the leaves start to fall.

We are excited to share our fall-themed creations with you today! After you read my post, I hope you’ll hop over to the next person on the list at the base of this post.

I live on farmland on the outskirts of town, so I pass a number of farms anytime I leave my house. While many people might have a specific vision of what a traditional barn looks like, they actually come in different shapes and colors. Depending on the route I take, I see barns that are red, yellow, white and/or brown.

This one, just down the road from my home, is one of my favorites:

The farmers around me who grow hay have just finished their second cut. Everywhere, the fields are honey-colored while the trees are turning that olive-green shade that means it won’t be long before they’re wearing their showy fall colors.

For my card, I wanted to evoke that image of a newly hayed pasture at the precipice of fall and winter, so I turned to the Heartland stamp set from Stampin’ Up!

To make this card, I first stamped the barn and pasture image in Basic Gray ink on Whisper White card stock. I then used Watercolor Pencils and Watercolor Pencils Assortment 2 to color the barn, pasture and foliage. The colors I used were: Cherry Cobbler, Crushed Curry, Basic Gray, Basic Black, Early Espresso, Balmy Blue and Old Olive.

Next, I used the Layering Circles to cut out the image and the layering mat in Old Olive card stock, then glued them together.

For my card base, I adhered a piece of the Wood Textures Designer Series Paper stack to Early Espresso card stock.

To incorporate the look of the many silos around my home, I used the Corrugated Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing Folder on a piece of Galvanized Metal paper.

Next, I wrapped a piece of Braided Linen Trim around the corrugated paper several times, then tied it. I stamped the sentiment from the Heartland stamp set on a leftover piece of the Wood Textures paper using Early Espresso ink. I used my Stamparatus to stamp over and over until the sentiment was dark enough, then tore the edges for a more rustic look. I used mini glue dots to attach the sentiment to the Linen Trim.

Then, I adhered the corrugated piece to the bottom two-thirds of my card using Glue Dots.

Finally, I attached the main image.

While Montana isn’t geographically considered “the heartland,” it is most definitely the land in my heart.

  1. Such a gorgeous card, Denise! Your coloring of the image is lovely, and I adore the texture you’ve added. I especially love the torn edges of your sentiment. So happy you hopped with us today! <3
